My role as Controller involves a lot of risk assessment and questioning of costs and new investments, which sometimes makes me feel negative.
Last fall my husband said when he read one articlel* about Psychologist Ida Hallgren; "Liselotte, now you've finally got it right!"
Ida Hallgren held her first course in thinking negatively and the course was immediately fully booked. Ida's message is "think negative, be happy". We are constantly encouraged to feel positive emotions. According to her, one consequence of not allowing oneself to think negatively is that one does not learn to deal with discomfort. Because we have become so preoccupied with getting rid of all the unpleasant feelings, we have lost the grip and tools we need to deal with the negative in life. Life consists of sorrow and love, adversity and success. In working life, we need Naysayers, we who raise the finger of warning, we who speak out and dare to question. We realists who see the risks, we are needed as well as the visionaries who only see opportunities and limitless success, we are needed in a balance in a symbiosis to achieve the best results.
This thing about knocking away everything negative and unpleasant is also rather unempathetic and egotistical. I have always reacted to pictures on social media like a wine glass with a sunset in the background with the text "Life is fair". I'm sorry, but life isn't fair. Millions of people are on the run, they don't even have a roof over their heads. People get cancer diagnoses who have never smoked a cigarette or otherwise misbehaved. I think you lose your grip if you don't take it in and think about it. I try to be present and also see the unpleasantness in life and see all the injustices, but I'm not a negative person for that. I believe that if you have a healthy dose of negativity in your basic attitude, the fall will not be so hard. Also, I think it makes me happier, I also appreciate the little things that many people take for granted every day.
Sadness and adversity is not a disease, it is life as well as love and happiness. What this also opens up for, on the other hand, is whining, whining about trifles and nonsense. I'm sorry, but the word offended is so abused in Sweden that I almost feel sick. Maybe also that that senseless and destructive whining can disappear if we dare to see the real problems and setbacks, maybe it opens up a distance so we don't have to hear all this whining in everyday life about nothing?
That is exactly what I perceive as negative, I myself am a self-proclaimed positive risk analyst.
To build a strong team in a workplace, a mix of personalities is needed where everyone is allowed to be and think in their own way without being blamed for it. I believe that a healthy business is based on different perspectives and daring to appreciate each other's differences.
Before recruiting, one should therefore ask how the candidate complements the team. One way to do this is through DISC analysis. Contact Us then we will tell you more about how we work with DISC and how it could facilitate your employment process.
